Antihistamines, Anyone?

This is a photo of our driveway this spring.
Notice the streaks of yellow?

(Oh, phooey, all those shadows are messing up the photo.   :(  Ya know, I didn’t even notice them when I took the picture.  Isn’t it amazing how the human eye overlooks some things that are glaringly blatant in a photograph??)

Here, let’s look at a detail:

That’s pollen, my friend!  And the pollen has been windswept into little corridors, collecting on our driveway.  We’ve already hosed off the deck furniture twice because it had a lovely chartreuse dusting all over it.

Good grief, no wonder I take pills every night for my allergies!

Of course, the leafed-out trees are simply gorgeous.  We’ve gone from daffodils and tulips and phlox blooming, to the Bradford Pear trees blooming and leafing out, to the Redbuds blooming and leafing out…  And now, it seems everything is leafing out. Everything is so luscious and green.   I love it!

I also love my Xyzal Rx.

Happy spring, everybody!

XOXO,
Lucky Dog

Calligraphic Painting with Teri Martin

This past weekend I had the privilege of attending a workshop taught by Teri Martin, administrator of CyberScribes and Artist with a capital A!

If you’re familiar with Teri’s work you know that she is known for her luscious, colorful pieces.  And the subject of the workshop was “Calligraphic Painting”, her specialty.  Yummy!

The weekend was full of color wheels, mixing paints and letting loose.  And Teri began the time by telling us that a lot of it is
Just Doing It.  And we did it and had a blast doing so.

I took my usual copious notes (haha), and here are some of my favorite things that I wrote down:

“If you’re not having fun, then what’s the point?”

“Never say purple to a color theorist!  It’s violet.”

“Paint for yourself.”

“You have to take chances to be an artist.”

She talked about not worrying about “ruining” a piece, because you could always cut it up and make it into a card….  But more importantly, she said that she actually liked being in that place.  [of feeling like it’s ruined]  Because then you really have nothing to lose and you can begin to take more risks.

We played with gesso and masking fluid and learned about things like split complementary palettes, all while splashing about with beautiful colors of paint.

Here’s another quote from Teri:

“Work like you have nothing to lose, because you don’t.
What, a little time and a piece of paper, maybe.
But..… what do you have to gain???”

It was a very inspiring weekend, and I plan on taking Teri’s advice, and mixing up a few color wheels with paints that I already own.

See?  If get in my studio and I don’t know what to do, I can
always pick 3 new primaries and paint a new color wheel
and get inspired.  Those tertiaries can surprise you!

Thanks, Teri, for a wonderful weekend.

XOXO,
Lucky Dog

Quote o' the Day

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.

Small people always do that, but the really great
make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

Happy Palm Sunday!

John 12 verses 12 and 13

The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city.  A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet Him.  They shouted, “Praise God!  Blessings on the One who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hail to the King of Israel!"

Cutest Dog Award

Okay, he hasn’t exactly won an award, but honestly,
couldn’t he?!

We’ve had the little rescue dog for over a year now, and it just keeps getting better and better.  I know I’ve said it before, but.. he’s such a *funny* dog!  Some day I’m gonna have to take a video of us playing together.  It's just too much fun!

And back when we got him, they had performed his little surgery, and had shaved a TON of his fur off.  So much so that we didn’t think it would ever grow back out.  And it didn’t.  For months and months.

But then as winter approached, sure ‘nuf, the coat got long and full, and I swear, 100X thicker!  All his fur filled back out and now he quite resembles a furry carpet bag when he walks.  Hahaha  Honestly, I wish you could see it!  His coat is ginormous!

But when he’s wet, well, now… that’s another story.

XOXO,
Lucky Dog

Sunday Scripture

Psalm 139 verses 23 and 24

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Point out anything in me that offends You,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

Mr. Man Approved

Here is a recipe for cookies for people with blood sugar issues.  They’re really yummy, and Mr. Man is so happy to have cookies again!

Magical Peanut Butter Cookies
by Paula Deen

2 c. peanut butter, creamy or crunchy
2 2/3 c. Splenda
2 eggs
2 t. vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Grease a large baking sheet.  (I use SilPat liners instead.)

1.  In a mixing bowl, combine ingredients well.
2.  Roll the dough into balls the size of walnuts
     and dip in Splenda.
3.  Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet and
press a crisscross design on each cookie with a fork.
4.  Bake for 12 min.  Cool on cooling racks.

This made about 3 dozen cookies.

Now I found that my peanut butter jar held just under 2 c.  So in the future, instead of measuring it, I think I will just empty it and use a bit less Splenda.  I’m lazy that way.

I imagine this is a high protein treat, too!  Double-yay!

XOXO,
Lucky Dog
